Humans have used cannabis for more than 5000 years, both for the relaxing effects, and for a broad assortment of medical benefits. Among those benefits is the treatment of nausea and vomiting.
Doctors had difficulty in being able to manage the nausea in their chemotherapy patients. Many patients reported significant benefit by smoking cannabis. In the 1970’s, oncologist sought to evaluate cannabis, and they found the same benefits were obtained with synthetic cannabinoid agonists nabilone and dronabinol (Marinol). However, both compounds can cause the intoxication that is associated with marijuana.
Doctors control vomiting with the use drugs that block the 5-HT3 receptor. (5-HT3 = 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 ). However, patients may pay a lot for these drugs. These drugs can be a burden on the liver, and in one case, was pulled from the market for causing heart problems.
In 2013, research conducted by E. M. Rock and L. A. Parker revealed the efficacy of CBDA on nausea in an animal model. Human trials subsequently validated this finding. Curiously, the research demonstrated that the efficacy of CBDA was a hundred times (or more) effective in controlling nausea than CBD or THC. Also, this huge improvement came with no psychoactive effects as all. ///
